In 1974, a frightened tigress cub was found alone on the banks of Odisha’s Khairi River, too young to hunt and too weak to survive.
She was brought to Saroj Raj Choudhury, the pioneering forest officer who helped shape Simlipal Tiger Reserve. Knowing she had little chance of surviving alone, he and his wife, Nihar Nalini Swain, brought the cub home, nursed her back to health, and named her Khairi.
Khairi didn’t grow up as a pet. She grew up as family.
She drank milk from their hands, slept beside them, played freely, and formed an extraordinary bond with the couple who had saved her life. When Saroj later tried to return her to the wild, Khairi kept finding her way back home, the only place where she truly felt safe.
Over the years, Saroj carefully observed her behaviour, contributing valuable insights to wildlife conservation and our understanding of big cats.
In 1981, tragedy struck when Khairi died after contracting rabies following a dog bite. Her loss deeply affected Saroj, who passed away not long afterwards. Until her final days, Nihar continued to call Khairi her daughter.
Their story reminds us that conservation isn’t only about protecting wildlife, it’s also about understanding, respect, and the profound connections that can exist between humans and the natural world.
