First Indian to Win Oskar Klein Medal, Still Cycles to Work!

He’s the first Indian to win the Oskar Klein Medal, yet he still cycles to work. His story is as much about simplicity as it is about extraordinary scientific achievement.

Meet Kolkata-born theoretical physicist Ashoke Sen, whose pioneering research in string theory and black hole physics has helped shape our understanding of the universe. After studying at Presidency College and IIT Kanpur and pursuing doctoral research in the United States, he returned to India to continue his scientific journey.

In 2012, Sen received the $3 million Fundamental Physics Prize for his contributions to string theory. In 2026, he made history by becoming the first Indian physicist to receive the Oskar Klein Medal, recognising his influential work in theoretical physics.

Despite global recognition and some of the field’s highest honours, Sen’s story reminds us that scientific greatness is measured by curiosity, dedication and the ideas we contribute, not by outward displays of success. His journey continues to inspire young Indians to pursue knowledge and push the boundaries of human understanding.
