Delhi Capitals provides update on Lungi Ngidi following pacer’s brutal injury in DC vs PBKS IPL 2026 clash

Delhi Capitals have shared an update on fast bowler Lungi Ngidi after the South African pacer suffered a frightening head injury during their IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday.

Ngidi had to be taken off the field in an ambulance after a painful fall while attempting a catch during Punjab Kings’ chase of 265. The incident left players, coaching staff, and fans deeply concerned as play was stopped for several minutes while doctors attended to him. More than an hour after the incident, Delhi Capitals shared an update on social media.

Lungi Ngidi suffers a painful injury

The scary moment unfolded in the third over of Punjab Kings’ innings when opener Priyansh Arya went after a delivery and sliced the ball high towards the mid-off region. Ngidi sprinted backwards from inside the circle, tracking the catch with his eyes. However, he failed to judge the ball properly and lost balance while trying to complete the chance.

As he fell backwards, the back of his head hit the ground hard on the Arun Jaitley Stadium outfield. The impact looked severe, and Ngidi immediately grabbed the back of his head in visible pain before staying down on the turf. Players from both teams quickly realized the seriousness of the situation as physios and doctors rushed onto the field to assist him.

Neck brace, stretcher and ambulance brought onto the field

Medical staff spent several minutes checking Ngidi’s condition as he remained on the ground. Given the nature of the injury, special care was taken with his neck and head. A brace was placed around his neck and under his head to prevent movement before he was carefully lifted onto a stretcher. An ambulance was then brought directly onto the field to transport him for further medical examination.

The atmosphere inside the stadium turned tense as fans watched in complete silence. With the hard Delhi surface adding to concerns, it looked highly unlikely that Ngidi would return to the game.

The franchise took to X (formerly Twitter) a little over an hour after Ngidi was stretchered off and confirmed that the South African pacer was in stable condition following medical checks at the hospital.

“Ngidi is stable and is due to be discharged shortly from the hospital,” the franchise wrote.

With Ngidi unable to continue, Delhi Capitals brought in Vipraj Nigam as their concussion substitute. The young leg-spinner replaced the South African in the playing XI and was eligible to bowl his full quota of four overs since Ngidi had not bowled before the injury occurred.

Speaking about the match, Delhi Capitals posted a massive 264/2 after choosing to bat first, thanks largely to a stunning unbeaten 152 from KL Rahul. However, Punjab Kings produced a sensational chase, reaching the target with seven balls to spare and registering the highest successful run chase in IPL history.
