Can Chennai’s Water Solution Save Hyderabad From Water Crisis?

Can Chennai’s Water Solution Save Hyderabad From Water Crisis?

#thebetterindia

Hyderabad is facing a serious water crisis. One of its main reservoirs has dropped to just 13%, and 6,000 water tankers are being booked every day.

But what if the solution lies in a simple idea that helped Chennai fight its own water crisis?

In 1995, Professor Sekhar Raghavan noticed something alarming. His tap water had turned salty because falling groundwater levels allowed seawater to seep in.

Chennai received plenty of rainfall, but much of that water was going to waste.

Instead of waiting for someone else to act, he began promoting rainwater harvesting.

His idea was simple: collect rainwater from rooftops, driveways and other surfaces, filter it, and allow it to recharge underground aquifers.

He cycled door to door, convincing residents to adopt the system. Many dismissed his efforts.

But he persisted.

In 2003, Tamil Nadu made rainwater harvesting mandatory in buildings. Groundwater levels reportedly rose by nearly 20 feet, helping Chennai improve its water security.

For around 15 years, the city benefited from this approach.
But there was a problem.

Poor maintenance, clogged filters and neglected recharge pits weakened many systems.

When Chennai faced another severe drought in 2019, the city once again came dangerously close to running out of drinking water.

Today, Chennai is exploring solutions such as sponge parks and underground rainwater capture systems to strengthen its water resilience.

The lesson? Rainwater harvesting isn’t just about installing systems. It’s about maintaining them, protecting groundwater and making every drop count.

With Hyderabad facing mounting water stress, could Chennai’s experience offer a way forward?

Should Hyderabad make rainwater harvesting a bigger priority?

Comment “RAIN WATER” if you think Hyderabad should learn from Chennai!
