A case has been registered against 31 people and some unidentified others for allegedly misleading a court by submitting false and forged affidavits to protect the accused in a 2020 gangrape case in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi district, police said on Wednesday.
Police said the case was filed at Unj police station on the direction of Chief Judicial Magistrate Anand Mishra. The survivor had moved the court on June 6, 2026, alleging that officials had helped the accused and that false affidavits were used to mislead the court and suppress her statement.
Additional Superintendent of Police Shubham Agrawal said the FIR was registered in compliance with the magistrate’s order issued on Tuesday. He said the case has been filed under relevant sections of the erstwhile IPC dealing with false statements and evidence, criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery.
According to police, the case goes back to 2020, when a 45-year-old woman alleged that she was raped multiple times inside her house in a village under the Unj police station area. The woman, a labourer, said Manoj, Arvind and five others entered her house, threatened her with weapons and raped her. She also alleged that several others joined them later. Based on her complaint, an FIR was registered under IPC sections 376D for gangrape and 506 for criminal intimidation, and an investigation was carried out.
Agrawal said that during the initial investigation, a chargesheet was filed along with affidavits submitted on behalf of the accused, but the woman’s statement was not recorded and her medical examination was not conducted. After the woman approached the court, it ordered a fresh investigation.
During the second investigation, police allegedly relied on false and fabricated affidavits, including documents said to have been filed without the signature of any advocate, and submitted a closure report before the court on October 30, 2021, Agrawal said. He said these developments led to social humiliation for the woman and her children.
Police said that after the woman challenged the closure report, the court recorded her statement under Section 200 of the IPC. Agrawal said the court later found prima facie merit in her gangrape allegations and allowed the prosecution to go ahead.
The woman later returned to court on June 6, 2026, with allegations that officials had helped the accused and that false affidavits had been used to mislead the court and suppress her statement. Following this complaint, the chief judicial magistrate directed Unj police to register a case against Rajpati Bind and 30 other named persons, along with unidentified individuals. Police said the matter is now under detailed investigation.
