The UAE moved to 11 medals at the 4th GCC Games in Doha, after adding medals across taekwondo, fencing, swimming, equestrian and athletics.
The Games are being held in Qatar from May 11 to 22, with the UAE now on two gold, two silver and seven bronze medals.
Abdulaziz Almheiri won gold in the men’s under-68kg taekwondo category, one of the standout results for the UAE delegation.
Maha Rabie added silver in the women’s under-57kg category, while Salma Al Ketbi won bronze in the women’s under-67kg event.
There were also two medals in fencing. Fares Al Balooshi took bronze in the foil competition, while Shaikha Al Zaabi won bronze in épée.
Hussain Shawqi added another bronze for the UAE in the men’s 100m freestyle, finishing in 51.84 seconds.
The UAE national equestrian team won silver in the team show jumping competition, while Ayoob Sarwashi claimed bronze in the 5,000m race walk on the opening day of athletics.
Ali Al Kindi, National Teams Director and Board Member of the UAE Fencing Federation, said the two fencing medals marked a positive start for the team in Doha.
“We congratulate our champions Fares Al Balooshi and Shaikha Al Zaabi on this honourable achievement at the start of the competitions, which reflects the great efforts made by the athletes and the technical and administrative teams,” Al Kindi said.
“We hope to continue achieving more positive results over the next two days of the tournament.”
Al Kindi also thanked the UAE Olympic Committee for its support, and praised the organisers in Doha for their work during the Games.
The UAE team will continue competing across the remaining days of the event, with more medals still available before the closing day on May 22.
