The final season lasted only three games, but No. 65 leaves Philadelphia with nothing left to prove.
Back in August, I wrote that 2026 could become the final chapter of Lane Johnson’s career, one of the greatest in Eagles history. The expectation was simple: one more season, another run at the playoffs and one last chance to watch a franchise cornerstone anchor the right side of the offensive line.
Instead, the farewell arrived four weeks into the season.
On October 6, the veteran right tackle announced his retirement from the NFL after 14 seasons, ending a career spent entirely in Philadelphia. The decision came two days after he missed the Eagles’ 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams for personal reasons.
Johnson explained that his personal and family priorities had changed and that he needed to focus on his mental health. He also made clear that continuing to play meant being fully committed, both mentally and emotionally.
This Was Not a Football Decline
What makes the timing so striking is that Johnson was still playing at an elite level.
After recovering from the foot injury that ended his 2025 season, the 36-year-old returned healthy and started Philadelphia’s first three games of 2026. He played every offensive snap in those games and entered Week 4 ranked first among NFL offensive tackles in both pass-block grade and pass-block win rate.
Even so, Johnson reached a point where priorities away from football carried more weight than another season.

The Future at Right Tackle Arrived Early
Philadelphia got its first glimpse of life without No. 65 against Los Angeles.
Rookie Markel Bell played the entire game at right tackle and is expected to remain there when the Eagles face the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Philadelphia selected the 6-foot-9, 346-pound tackle with the 68th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, giving the organization a young option to develop behind Johnson before the veteran eventually stepped away.
The timeline changed. Bell must now learn on the job instead of spending his rookie season developing behind Johnson.
He needs to protect Jalen Hurts, handle the pressure that comes with replacing a franchise legend and find his footing on an offensive line that just lost its most experienced player. For a 2-2 team still searching for consistency on offense, that transition has become one of the biggest challenges of the season.
The Eagles also agreed Wednesday to trade center Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens, pending a physical. The move adds another layer of uncertainty to an offensive line already in transition.
A Career That Connected Eagles Eras
Six Pro Bowls, five AP All-Pro selections, two Super Bowl championships and 14 seasons with one franchise tell only part of the story.
Johnson adapted to different coaches, quarterbacks and offensive schemes throughout his career. He helped anchor offensive lines featuring Jason Kelce and Brandon Brooks and later provided veteran leadership alongside Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens.
More important, he connected two championship eras. He played a key role in Philadelphia’s first Super Bowl victory after the 2017 season and remained a foundational piece when the Eagles lifted the Lombardi Trophy again following the 2024 campaign.
Jason Kelce paid tribute to his longtime partner, praising his exceptional ability and writing that it was “a pure joy to be his friend.”
Off the field, Johnson also became an advocate for mental health awareness, drawing on his own experiences to help others. His charitable work earned him the Eagles’ nomination for the 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
Philadelphia now has to figure out how to replace one of the defining players of its modern era. His place in Eagles history was already secure.
