But while roads disappeared underwater, Captain Santhosh Kumar noticed something unusual—the city’s lakes remained almost dry. 🌧️🌊
He realised the problem wasn’t the rain. It was the storm water drains that had been blocked, buried, or encroached upon over the years.
Using British-era maps from 1923, the former Army officer traced forgotten drainage channels, identified encroachments, and helped uncover a 4-km-long buried waterway.
The impact was remarkable. When the next heavy rains arrived, his locality stayed dry while neighbouring areas flooded. Since then, his efforts have contributed to restoring natural drainage and reviving 14 ancient lakes.
His story reminds us that sometimes, the smartest solutions aren’t new—they’re the ones we’ve forgotten.
