Sreeleela made a case for reimagining the classic sari with a creation by designer Gopi Vaid. The ivory-beige sari, from the label’s Chaar Bagh collection, came with delicate floral motifs and a graphic, multicoloured border replete with gota patti.

Scattered with floral motifs in muted brown and silver, the sari featured sequin-like embellishments across the fabric. Along the pallu and hem, a vibrant border brought together a bevy of colours in chevron and geometric patterns. Graphic detailing along the edges of the pallu added a playful contrast to the neutral base.

The sari’s mermaid silhouette was what made it unique. Instead of going for conventional pleats, the lower half of the sari opened into tiers of crushed fabric. The blouse was designed as a strapless, sweetheart-neckline corset, repeating the colours and embroidery seen along the sari’s borders.

Styled by Malkit J Gill, her jewellery included a statement choker with green and pink gemstones, stone earrings and a cocktail ring. A gold-toned bangle added another traditional touch, all from Vani Jewels. She finished with white embellished heels from The OrOh Life.

Her hair was styled into a sleek ponytail, while her makeup featured groomed lashes, rose-tinted eyeshadow, a small red bindi and a glossy lip.

Sreeleela has consistently brought her own take to the sari, gravitating towards embellished fabrics. From Torani’s chintz-printed sari to an emerald-green creation by Papa Don’t Preach, her Gopi Vaid creation continues that streak, pairing the sari with a more playful construction.

From the Vogue desk:

“Sreeleela’s Gopi Vaid sari is an interesting take on the classic Indian garment. Those who want their saris pre-draped and off-beat can surely pick something like this for pre-wedding events like the haldi or mehendi at a wedding or for family gatherings now that the festive season, too, will be on in full-swing,” says Ashwini Arun Kumar, Vogue India fashion features editor.
