Sonam Kapoor’s Mughal-style choker features uncut diamonds set in a heritage jadai style

Sonam Kapoor was on a sabbatical from making public appearances since giving birth to her second child. But for a special unveiling of Jaipur-based jeweller Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas’s vintage pieces at the Jio World Plaza mall in Mumbai, the actor broke her own hiatus, and stepped out in an all black ensemble. Styled by her sister Rhea Kapoor, the look was a textbook lesson in mixing and matching, and making an outfit truly feel like your own. And, of course, on how to wear XXL chokers—a jewellery style that is making a comeback this wedding season.

Kapoor’s look featured a black anarkali—a silhouette the actor has been reaching for of late—with a Benarasi striped dupatta. She draped her look with yet another Benarasi dupatta from Varanasi-based label, Shanti Benaras. The second dupatta, handcrafted woven in tussar georgette, draws from traditional Pichwai style paintings and features motifs of dancing ‘gopikas’, peacocks, foliage and architectural details of gumbazes and minarets in brocade. The pallu and borders are woven with fine gold zari and took expert artisans of Varanasi six weeks to make.

The necklace and the earrings—both from Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas—were the highlight of this look. The choker was designed around an uncut 10-carat diamond that sits the lowest on the last strand, surrounded by smaller polkis (uncut diamonds). Inspired by Mughal motifs, the necklace is set in 24 carat gold and studded with a unique jadai technique (a precious stone setting style) from Jaipur. The earring stack felt inspired by the bugadi piercing worn by women of Maharashtra and Karnataka on the helix or cartilage rim.

The simplicity of Kapoor’s makeup added to the overall look without taking away from it. She turned to bronzed eyes, blush draped over the cheeks and coral lips to complete her beauty. Her hair, tied in a clean bun, let the earrings shine, literally.
