Actress Vidya Malavade has opened up about how she deals with scam calls and the precautions she takes to protect her personal information. The actor, who plays the lead role in Story TV’s Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story, said she disconnects calls as soon as she suspects something is amiss. She also recalled a recent incident at a hotel that prompted her to reconsider handing over her Aadhaar card as identification.

Recalling her experiences with fraudulent calls, Vidya said, “I have received a lot of scam calls, but I have always managed to identify them. Fortunately, I haven’t had too many such incidents because the moment I sense that something isn’t right, I disconnect the call. I also feel that speaking to someone over the phone for too long could put your personal details at risk. I had even heard that if you speak to someone on the phone for a long time, your voice can be cloned. So, the moment I feel that someone is asking for a password, PIN or any such information, that’s it. I disconnect the call.”
The actress also shared an experience from a recent hotel stay, when a co-star pointed out the personal information that could be exposed through her identification document. She explained, “Just last week, I was staying at a hotel as we were there for a performance. When they asked for ID proof, I was about to hand over my Aadhaar card, but my co-star immediately asked me, ‘Why are you giving your Aadhaar card?’ I hadn’t even realised that it contained all my personal details. That’s when I handed over my passport instead.”
Vidya’s experiences connect with the subject of her latest series, which explores digital fraud and the methods scammers use to manipulate their victims. Reflecting on playing Priya Sharma, a working professional whose life changes after she falls victim to a digital arrest scam, the actress spoke about how the story affected her.
“I have played women who fight on a field, as the last line of defence. What frightened me most while playing Priya was realising she could be any of us. Our parents. Our neighbours. Priya is educated, she is careful, she does everything right, and she still loses everything in a single afternoon. Now think about people who aren’t as familiar with the digital world. That is what makes this story matter. If it makes even one family pause before that one scam phone call, it has done more than most stories ever get to.”
Marking Vidya’s debut in the microdrama format, Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story follows Priya as she becomes entangled in a larger network of deception involving fake identities, fear and intimidation. As she discovers that others have also been targeted, her journey takes an unexpected turn.
The series also features Pratik Sehajpal, Vineet Raina, Sandeep Aurora, Priyanshi Tripathi, Puja Jha, Ayushi Tyagi, Shital Tejwani, Ashok K Jha and Yogesh Pawar. Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story is currently streaming exclusively on the Story TV app.
