Less than a week is left for the release of Ramayana, and the trade and industry are eagerly waiting to see whether the film will live up to the gigantic expectations. Though touted as a Diwali release, the film arrives in cinemas on November 5, four days before the festival. Over the years, filmmakers have preferred to release their films either on Diwali or a day later, as the post-Diwali holiday is considered one of the most lucrative days at the box office. Interestingly, for Ramayana, this all-important day will fall on its fifth day of release.
Ramayana’s November 5 release is a GUTSY move, says trade: “If it manages to sell 6 lakh tickets before release at highest possible ATP, you are easily looking at a Rs. 100 cr plus day 1”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh explained, “This is a time when a lot of people are busy with festivities, ghar ki safaai, shopping, etc. Hence, there’s a perception in the industry that this is a time when people don’t go to watch movies. However, I believe that there’s a strong section of moviegoers that would go and watch a film like Ramayana. It is so beautifully timed and is the most appropriate release for this season.”
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, opined, “There’s a pre-Diwali effect as people are busy with the festivities. The makers could have released the film on November 7 or November 8, closer to Diwali. That’s because the day after Diwali is the biggest at the box office. But probably the makers are confident of the product and of the opening that it would take. Advances are good to great so far. If it manages to sell 6 lakh tickets before release at the highest possible ATP, then you are easily looking at a Rs. 100 crore plus day.”
He also said the decision has been a godsend for exhibitors like him, “Ramayana is now releasing 4 days before Diwali. Had it come on November 9 instead of November 5, I may have had to shut shop until Ramayana’s release, as the holdover releases are now coming to the end of their run. Thanks to Ramayana, I’ll be making money even before the festival. So, exhibitors are happy. Meanwhile, the producers get an extended festive first week. It’s a win-win situation from that perspective.”
He added, “Normally films are released on Diwali or a day after. Hence, it’s a gutsy move on the part of the producers.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan clarified, “I won’t call this pre-Diwali. The film is releasing in the Diwali week. Diwali falls on Sunday while the film releases 4 days before, on Thursday.”
He continued, “Ramayana is such a topic that every parent would want their child to watch it. We all know what the story is. But now, with the advent of technology, makers can make it visually appealing. This advantage was not there. Yet, the makers of the TV show ‘Ramayan’ did a commendable job. Now, VFX makes things easier in making visually appealing cinema. Ranbir Kapoor is one of the biggest stars. These factors have gone in favour of the film.”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal agreed, “In the earlier versions of ‘Ramayan’, popular actors didn’t play the lead roles. But in this film, we have Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, who are immensely popular, being cast as Lord Rama and Ravana. Meanwhile, who can be better for the role of Lord Hanuman than Sunny Deol? This will be a major advantage for the film and will also entice those who may not be followers of the epic, Ramayana, or those belonging to other religions.”
However, he admitted, “The labour class and families are busy with the celebrations. That keeps them away from cinemas on Diwali and before. The same effect is also seen during Ramzan.”
