Rafael Devers returned to Boston. He was cheered. He was booed. He hit a home run. He lost.
It was an eventful night, to say the least.
Devers, who was traded away from the Red Sox to Giants last year, played his first game as a visitor at Fenway Park, stepping to the plate in the top of the first inning and receiving a mix of boos and cheers from the Boston crowd. The boos may have outnumbered the cheers at that point, but Devers received a nice ovation when a tribute video played on the video board after the first inning.
Devers’ return — which included a laser-beam home run to center field — was overshadowed by a 450-foot home run by Willson Contreras, a gutty six-inning effort from Sonny Gray, and a save by Aroldis Chapman, as the Red Sox earned a 6-4 win over the Giants on Friday night at Fenway.
