If there was one material on designer’s lips in recent seasons, it was pony hair. No longer a niche texture, pony hair has re-emerged as one of fashion’s most directional finishes — signalling a broader shift towards tactile, statement-making accessories.
It’s a trend we saw gain traction in Paris during the Spring Summer 2026 season, where designers traded smooth leather accessories for something a little furrier. Nowhere was this more apparent than Matthieu Blazy’s debut at Chanel, which saw the birth of an instantly covetable pony hair pump — which has since become one of the hardest items to get your hands on, and set the tone for what would quickly become a wider runway movement.
By Haute Couture Week in mid-January 2026, the presence of pony hair had become inescapable. Schiaparelli’s couture show fused the natural world with the brand’s signature surreal details, with alligator textures and feathers repeated like a visual incantation. Chanel dabbled in similarly animalistic textures across its Couture, Métiers d’Art, and Fall Winter 2026 shows, where insects, and the mimicry of fauna skin seemed to occupy Blazy’s imagination entirely. Then came Roberto Cavalli, which followed suit with zebra-striped mohair that leaned fully into the material’s maximalist potential. Before long, these designers’ influence inevitably trickled down to the high streets with pony hair dominating the collections of COS, St. Agni and Camilla and Marc, among others.
What sets pony hair apart is its ability to transform even the simplest silhouette. In a landscape saturated with minimalism, it offers instant impact — adding depth and a sense of tactility that smooth leather simply can’t replicate. A pony hair ballet flat or shoulder bag doesn’t just complement an outfit; it becomes the focal point.
We’re looking for pieces that feel worthy of our investment in a moment when all fashion begins to register as a luxury. There is a desire for assurance, that what we acquire will endure, materially and emotionally. There’s a lean towards comfort, tactility, and to garments that offer a sense of protection, shelter, even escapism. Above all, we want to feel something both literally and emotionally. Pony hair, in this sense, has become the accessible answer. It punctuates the capsule wardrobe with something sensorial and alive, elevating even the most pared-back look into something more declarative
The appeal is undeniable. Trends may come and go, but pony hair is hardly transient, it’s a material that has persisted for years and will likely continue to do so. Below, find our favourite pony hair pieces we’re coveting.
