Australia secures another 100 million litres of diesel

Australia has secured another 100 million litres of diesel as the Federal Government works to protect regional communities from ongoing global fuel volatility.

The latest supply includes approximately 50 million litres, or 300,000 barrels, of diesel bound for Queensland communities including Townsville, Gladstone and Mackay, with the Government saying fuel is being directed to areas where it is needed most.

It follows a wider push to strengthen Australia’s fuel security, with around 400 million litres of additional diesel secured over the past seven days through partnerships with Ampol, BP Australia and Viva Energy. The Government is also continuing work with Park Fuels, IOR, Incitec Pivot and CSBP to help secure further fuel and fertiliser shipments.

The move comes amid ongoing global volatility and recent pressure on Australia’s fuel supply chains, with earlier diesel shipments secured under the Government’s new Strategic Reserve powers.

The Government says the aim is to keep regional and rural Australia moving, supporting farmers, freight operators, essential services and communities that rely heavily on secure diesel supply.

Senator the Hon Don Farrell, Minister for Trade and Tourism and Special Minister of State says, “Approximately 400 million litres of additional fuel have now been secured as a direct result of the Albanese Government’s new Strategic Reserve powers, getting more fuel where it is needed across Australia.”

“Through these early actions and the additional shipments that are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, we are securing supplies that are essential for our industries to keep moving in the face of the continued conflict in the Middle East.”

The Hon Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy says, “We are strengthening our fuel supply chain working with industry, and these additional cargoes from our third partner to secure shipments to date is proof of this work.

“We have now secured an additional 400 million litres of diesel, together with existing contracted supply that’s flowing to Australia, ensuring we keep Australia moving.”
