An overseas-based caller identifying himself as gangster Goldy Brar has demanded 5 crore in extortion from a Delhi restaurant owner and threatened to kill him or his family if the money is not paid, police said.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), an FIR is being registered based on the complaint.
The complaint was filed by Rajkumar Walia, owner of BREATH Fine Lounge & Bar and Markaz Bar & Restaurant in Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh area. Walia approached the Punjabi Bagh Police Station after receiving extortion threats from foreign phone numbers.
According to the complaint, Walia received a voice note on his mobile phone from an international number at around 10:30 pm on July 18. The sender identified himself as Goldy Brar and demanded 5 crore. The caller warned that if the money was not paid, either Walia or one of his family members would be killed. The caller also threatened that after killing a family member, he would demand 10 crore.
An audio recording of the extortion threat has also surfaced. In the recording, the caller identifies himself as Goldy Brar while issuing the threats.
According to the complaint, Walia received two more calls from another international number on the afternoon of July 19. The caller introduced himself as Manish Kharkhoda and claimed to be Goldy Brar’s younger brother. He repeated the 5 crore extortion demand and warned Walia of serious consequences if he failed to pay.
The complainant said he told the caller that he did not have such a large amount of money and that someone had provided incorrect information about him. However, the caller continued issuing threats.
Following the calls, Walia said he and his family are living in fear. He requested police protection and sought strict action against the unidentified accused.
Police have started investigating the case based on the complaint.
Goldy Brar is wanted in India. Recently, the FBI also placed him on its wanted list and announced a reward of USD 50,000 for information leading to him. The latest extortion allegation comes despite the reward announced by US authorities.
