A young couple was assaulted with bamboo sticks in the middle of a busy road in Odisha’s Berhampur city on Monday, triggering outrage after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The video showed two men repeatedly attacking the couple in full public view as commuters and pedestrians watched in shock. A few bystanders attempted to intervene while many others appeared helpless as the attack continued.
According to preliminary information, the assault is suspected to have stemmed from past enmity, though the exact motive behind the attack is yet to be confirmed by the police.
The injured couple was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Doctors later confirmed that both victims are stable and undergoing medical care.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among local residents, who questioned the deteriorating sense of public safety and the reluctance of bystanders to step in during such violent attacks.
Meanwhile, the Baidyanathpur Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Officials said they are examining the viral video, recording statements from witnesses and trying to identify and trace the attackers.
However, the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Town Police Station, Berhampur, said no formal complaint had been filed in connection with the incident so far.
