On 26 August 2026, five-year-old Ishara Tamang watched the flood take her mother.
“My mother was swept away. I jumped and moved forward, then got trapped in the net,” she told rescuers afterward, from a hospital bed in Kathmandu, in reporting on flood survivors’ accounts. She had been near her home in Khalte village, Rasuwa district, when the water came. She jumped, got tangled in a rescue net, and was pulled out alive, injured and alone. When she woke in hospital, she could tell staff one thing that mattered: her father was in Kathmandu. Her mother is still missing.
A little further down the same valley, Nepali Army soldiers waded into the water near Betrawati to pull out a pair of infant twins stranded by the rising river. What happened next was filmed and shared widely: women soldiers wrapping the babies in blankets, cradling them, rocking them amid the disaster (watch here).
In another clip that travelled just as fast, a Nepal Army officer holds a child too frightened to say who she is. “Don’t worry,” she tells her. “Your mother will come.” (watch here) Nobody around her knew, in that moment, if that was true.
A five-year-old does not need to understand a glacier to know her mother is gone. A soldier does not need a science degree to know a frightened child needs to be held. But the rest of the story is what put that child in the water, and it starts high in the mountains, long before the flood ever reached her village.

What actually happened

At first, some reports suspected an earthquake. Satellite images told a different story: a large section of glacier near the Langtang region had broken away, sending ice and rock crashing into the Lhende Khola river, and the debris flow became a flash flood moving at over 160 km/h in places.
The human cost of climate change
Nepal’s flood produced a great many numbers. By the United Nations’ last count,more than 900 people had been confirmed dead and over 4,200 remained missing, making this Nepal’s deadliest disaster since the 2015 earthquake.
But climate change, at ground level, does not arrive as a number. It arrives as a mother swept off her feet in front of her daughter. The UN’s own tally makes this plain: more than 22,000 children were assessed as needing protection services in the days after the flood, meaning a child who had lost the adult meant to be looking after them, even for a while. Around 107, like Ishara, were separated from parents or caregivers outright. Nineteen schools were damaged, nine destroyed entirely.
This is what climate change looks like once you stop describing it as weather and start describing it as a childhood interrupted.
The response fell largely on people in uniform: roughly 19,000 security personnel and 16 helicopters were deployed, and at one hydropower site alone, soldiers pulled 254 trapped workers to safety. But the most important work could not be counted in numbers rescued. It was sitting with a child who did not know where her mother was, and staying there until someone else could take over. Women soldiers of the Nepali Army did this again and again: with the infant twins near Betrawati, with the girl told her mother would come, with dozens of others whose names never made any report. None could promise a child her mother was alive. What they could do, and did, was make sure no child sat alone in the wreckage of her own home.
Why the mountain gave way
A glacier is not a frozen rock. It is a huge mass of ice that slowly moves downhill, and when the mountain beneath it grows warmer and less stable, a section of ice and rock can break away, exactly as it did above Ishara’s village.
Climate change did not simply switch on a tap and create this one flood; scientists are still studying the precise chain of events. But Reuters quoted scientists saying unusually warm conditions and rapid snowmelt likely weakened the glacier before it collapsed. Climate change may not have delivered the single push. But it is changing the mountain itself, which means this will not be the last time.
Think of an ice cube left out on the counter: it melts, weakens, changes shape. A glacier works the same way, just on a far larger scale. As temperatures rise, glaciers lose ice, and permafrost, the frozen “glue” that holds mountain slopes together, can thaw too. A 2026 ICIMOD assessment found glacier ice loss across the Hindu Kush Himalayas has doubled since 2000, with up to 27 metres of ice thickness lost since 1975.

That does not end with the ice. Retreating glaciers can leave behind lakes held back only by loose rock, not concrete; if that wall breaks, a glacial lake outburst flood can send water downhill in minutes. And for a while, melting glaciers mean more water in rivers, before it means less, once the ice reserve runs out — too much water, then, later, not enough, in a region whose rivers more than 750 million people depend on, across Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and beyond. Water does not stop at a border. Neither, it turns out, does grief.
The kitchen table conversation
Child: “Why did Nepal suddenly flood?” Parent: “A piece of glacier and rock collapsed in the mountains and sent a huge amount of water, ice and mud into a river.”
Child: “I saw soldiers holding crying children. Where were their parents?” Parent: “Some were still missing. Floods like this happen so fast that families get separated in minutes.”
Child: “Did climate change cause it?” Parent: “We can’t say it alone caused this one collapse. But the Himalayas are warming and glaciers are shrinking, and that makes disasters like this more likely, and more frequent.”
We now know we can see it coming
Here is the part of this story that should give us hope rather than dread. Scientists later found that the glacier had been giving warnings. Satellite radar analysed by geophysicist Manoochehr Shirzaei showed the glacier-rock mass creeping downhill for months, then accelerating sharply in the days before it fell. A separate hazard assessment found the glacier’s meltwater had turned visibly brown on 24 August, and a crack had opened into the bedrock beneath it, all before the avalanche. With the right systems, researchers estimated people downstream could have had at least ten minutes’ warning, in a flood moving at 160 km/h. The mountain was not silent. Nobody was listening yet.
“We can’t say, oh my God, nobody knew,” said glaciologist Jakob Steiner, pointing to what’s still missing: a satellite system that watches continuously for accelerating glacier movement and feeds it straight into flood warnings. “This is where I think we need to invest more,” he said.
It already works. During the floods, a warning reached a school in Nepal minutes before it arrived, and a fast-acting principal evacuated over 900 students and staff to safety. Imagine that instinct built into a system for the whole mountain range, whose glaciers and snow support nearly two billion people downstream. Protecting the mountains means protecting the people who live far below them, and the children who might otherwise be pulled from a river by a stranger who doesn’t yet know their name.

The warning is already here
The glaciers are getting thinner. Mountain slopes are growing more fragile, and now, for the first time, we can watch some of them tell us so, days before they fail.
The Nepal floods are not proof every future flood will be caused by melting glaciers. They are more useful than that: a warning, and a lesson in what listening looks like — a satellite that catches a crack widening, a principal who doesn’t wait to double-check, a soldier who picks up a child she has never met and simply holds her until someone can tell her what happened to her mother.
Somewhere in Kathmandu, Ishara Tamang is still waiting for news of hers. That, more than any temperature chart, is the real cost of a warming Himalaya.
