Mediaweek website returns after outage as Vinyl Group resolves domain issue

The website for industry trade publication Mediaweek is back online after a disruption that left the site inaccessible for more than 24 hours, with the domain issue now understood to have been resolved.

The outage, which affected the Mediaweek.com.au domain, was widely believed to be linked to a registration problem involving owner Vinyl Group and registrar Melbourne IT. While no official explanation has been provided, the issue had resulted in the domain entering a suspension window.

That suspension period raised concerns the publication’s web address could be at risk if control was not regained within a set timeframe. However, the restoration of the site indicates the matter has now been addressed.

The incident followed Vinyl Group’s acquisition of the Mediaweek brand in August 2024 from Chattr, in a deal estimated at $1 million in cash and shares.

After taking ownership, the company introduced changes to editorial leadership. James Manning, who had a 24-year history with the publication, initially stepped in as acting managing editor before being made redundant in November 2024.

According to earlier domain registration records, Manning remained listed as the primary contact, prompting speculation that attempts to reach the business may have been directed to an inactive email address.

The outage had raised the prospect of the domain being released to the open market if an agreement could not be reached during the suspension period.
