As heatwaves continue to grip Uttar Pradesh, street vendors across Lucknow spend long hours working under an unforgiving sun, often without even a patch of shade to protect them. For many, stepping away from work is not an option. Every hour on the roadside means a chance to earn enough to support their families.
Watching this daily struggle unfold pushed 22-year-old Khushi Pandey to act.
Through her NGO, Sapno Ki Udaan Foundation, she launched Project Chhanv, a simple initiative aimed at bringing relief to vendors battling the scorching summer heat. The effort focuses on distributing large umbrellas to roadside workers, giving them a small but meaningful shield from rising temperatures.
So far, the foundation has distributed 264 umbrellas across the city. For vendors selling fruits, vegetables, snacks, or small household items by the roadside, the umbrellas have become more than just protection from sunlight. They offer comfort, dignity, and the ability to continue working without constant exposure to harsh weather.
The initiative has also sparked support from local residents, many of whom have come forward to contribute after seeing the impact on the ground.
Each umbrella costs Rs 950, and the foundation hopes to reach many more vendors before peak summer intensifies further.
At a time when conversations around climate and heatwaves often remain limited to statistics and forecasts, Project Chhanv is addressing the crisis in a deeply human way.
