A 28-year-old man suffered multiple fractures to his ribs and hands after he was assaulted and robbed by two men near Aluva railway station in Kochi, police said on Monday.
Jofin Joju, from Kodanad near Kochi, is undergoing treatment in the ICU of a private hospital.
According to police, the incident took place early on Sunday morning when Joju was walking towards the railway station. An FIR said the two accused first threw a stone at him, causing a head injury, and then attacked him further.
The FIR said that when Joju tried to run away, the men restrained him, tied his hands and legs with ropes and kicked him into a nearby canal. The assault caused a fracture to his right wrist and a wound on his chin.
While he was lying on the ground, the accused kicked him and repeatedly struck the right side of his ribcage with a granite stone, the FIR said. Police said this caused three fractures on the right side. The accused then threatened to kill him and took Rs 1,000 from his bag and the chain he was wearing.
Joju later contacted his friends, who reached the spot and took him to hospital. Aluva police have registered a case and started an investigation.
Police said CCTV footage from the area has been examined and people suspected of involvement in similar theft cases are being tracked. Officials said several suspects have been identified and efforts are under way to trace and question them.
