Kanpur Police has suspended a constable attached to a Police Response Vehicle (PRV) after an inquiry found prima facie evidence that he had allegedly accepted free food items from local vendors, following complaints by traders and the circulation of a viral video on social media.
The controversy began when members of a traders’ association recorded a video showing the driver of a PRV vehicle consuming ice cream while on duty. The footage was later shared on social media and forwarded to senior police officials along with a formal complaint.
According to the complaint, the PRV vehicle, identified as number 9303 and deployed under the emergency response service 112, was frequently stationed near shops in the area. Traders alleged that police personnel attached to the vehicle regularly demanded free ice cream from a nearby cart and free golgappas from a street vendor.
Members of the traders’ body claimed they documented one such instance on video, showing a police personnel eating ice cream while seated inside the vehicle. The video was subsequently circulated online and brought to the attention of police authorities.
Following the complaint, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anand Kumar Jha ordered an inquiry into the allegations. The investigation reportedly found the charges to be prima facie true, leading to the suspension of one police personnel attached to the PRV unit.
Confirming the action, ACP Jha said allegations had been made against the police personnel for demanding free items from vendors. After a preliminary inquiry found a substance in the complaint, the constable was suspended.
The ACP added that a detailed investigation has now been handed over to the ACP of Ghatampur. Further departmental and legal action, if required, will be taken after the final inquiry report is submitted.
