IAS Tukaram Mundhe’s Massive Food Safety Crackdown in Maharashtra

A law is only as strong as its enforcement. ⚖️🍽️

Since taking charge as Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner, IAS Tukaram Mundhe has launched one of the state’s biggest food safety crackdowns.

The numbers tell the story:

✅ 1,100+ inspections
✅ 56 restaurant and hotel licences cancelled
✅ ₹50 crore worth of unsafe food seized
✅ 322 establishments sealed
✅ 457 people arrested

And when his team inspected the Bombay High Court’s canteens, status didn’t matter. Two kitchens were found operating without valid licences, while another received a compliance notice.

The result? Restaurants across Maharashtra have reportedly begun deep-cleaning their kitchens, upgrading hygiene standards, and working towards compliance.

Transferred 25 times in 21 years, IAS Tukaram Mundhe has built a reputation for applying the same rules to everyone—whether it’s a roadside eatery, a popular restaurant, or a prestigious institution.

Because when it comes to food safety, public health should never have exceptions.
