Singapore is releasing 10 million mosquitoes every week to fight dengue. 🦟 Sounds strange, right? But these aren’t ordinary mosquitoes—they’re specially bred male Aedes mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia, a naturally occurring bacterium. When they mate with wild females, their eggs don’t hatch, helping reduce mosquito populations.
The strategy is already showing promising results. In some Singapore sites, Aedes mosquito numbers have fallen by up to 90%, while a recent trial found around 71% protection against dengue infection. Instead of simply killing mosquitoes, this approach uses biology to disrupt their reproduction and reduce disease transmission.
