The Cleveland Browns turned heads on Monday after trading Myles Garrett away to the Los Angeles Rams. In exchange, the club received Jared Verse, along with a package of future draft picks. The latest rumor intel suggests L.A. was the perfect trade partner because of how important it was for Cleveland to acquire Verse in the deal.
Reports indicate that the Browns wanted a young pass rusher with a ton of potential as part of the return package for Garrett, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The Rams have allegedly been in talks with Cleveland for quite some time, and the fact that the front office was willing to give up Verse helped ensure the deal went through.
“Few Browns notes on Myles Garrett trade from SportsCenter. Browns’ desire for a young, ascending pass rusher (and Jared Verse, specifically) shrunk candidate pool,” reported Fowler. “Per team source, this was a Rams-specific deal because Rams ‘hounded’ CLE for a while. Myles Garrett did not request a trade similar to last offseason. Team made deal because due to the trade value.”
Fowler also claimed that Cleveland is not looking to trade all of their veteran stars, and shut down the idea of Denzel Ward potentially being dealt away as well. Either way, it sounds like the Browns got the most desirable deal possible and feel comfortable with the trade package to justify trading away the two-time Defensive Player of the Year in his prime.
But Jared Verse is certainly no schmuck. In two years playing for the Rams, the former first-round pick has been an excellent pass rusher in Los Angeles. He joins the Browns after recording 124 combined tackles (71 solo), 12 sacks, five forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in his career so far.
