Gurugram Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly posing as a doctor, carrying out illegal abortions and running a clinic without a valid medical degree, officials said on Monday. Police said they recovered a medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) kit, a large quantity of pharmaceutical drugs and medical equipment from the accused. The action followed a complaint by the Gurugram nodal officer under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
According to police, the complaint was lodged at Sector-65 police station on Sunday after secret information was received that Kamal Mahto was running a clinic called Kamal Clinic without possessing any valid medical degree. The complaint said he was allegedly posing as a doctor and illegally carrying out abortions on pregnant women.
Acting on the input, police sent a pregnant woman to the clinic as a decoy customer. Police said the accused charged her Rs 1,200 for performing an abortion and gave her an MTP kit while explaining how it should be used. After receiving a pre-arranged signal from the decoy customer, a police team raided the clinic and arrested him.
During questioning, the accused admitted that he had studied up to Class 12 and did not have any recognised medical degree, police said. His clinic was also not registered under the MTP Act. Police said he could not produce any patient records or documents related to the purchase, sale or distribution of medicines.
A case was then registered against him at Sector-65 police station. Police identified the accused as Kamal Mahto, originally from Malda district in West Bengal and currently living in Ghata village in Gurugram. A senior police officer said, “We are questioning the accused and further investigation underway.” In sum, police said the arrest followed a complaint, a decoy operation and the recovery of medicines and equipment from the clinic.
