A man wanted for the rape and murder of his four-year-old niece was killed in a police encounter in Ghaziabad on Sunday, over a week after the crime shocked the city.
Jaseem, also known as Chhotu, had been on the run since April 11, when he allegedly lured his four-year-old niece with candy, sexually assaulted her, and strangled her to death. Later, he hid her body under a car in Shalimar Garden before fleeing.
An FIR was registered the following day after CCTV footage captured him walking away with the child. The Ghaziabad Police Commissioner had also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.
Acting on specific intelligence on Sunday, police set up a checkpoint in the Tila Mor Police Station area to intercept Jaseem. When cornered, he opened fire on the personnel. Police returned fire, killing him on the spot. Two constables sustained injuries in the exchange.
The Ghaziabad Police’s SWAT team has intensified its operations against criminals in 2026, resulting in a series of high-stakes encounters and arrests.
