Free public transport and extra services announced for Anzac Day in Adelaide

Getting to Anzac Day commemorations across Adelaide will be a little bit easier this year, with the State Government rolling out free public transport for current and former defence personnel, alongside a boost to services for the wider community.

The initiative will allow veterans and active service members to travel free across the Adelaide Metro network on Anzac Day, helping them attend commemorative events across the city.

To access free travel, eligible passengers simply need to wear their uniform or service medals or present a valid Veteran Card.

Extra services will also be in place to support the thousands expected to attend dawn services and marches, particularly in the Adelaide CBD and Glenelg. Special bus services will operate from local RSL clubs, making it easier for veterans to travel into the city for the Anzac Day March.

Following the march, a dedicated Digger Shuttle will run between the National War Memorial on North Terrace and Victoria Square, operating every 15 minutes from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.

The additional services aim to make sure those paying their respects can move easily between key locations, while also easing congestion during one of the busiest commemorative days of the year.

Joe Szakacs MP Minister for Infrastructure and Transport shared, “Anzac Day is one of the most important days on our calendar.

“That is why we’re making it easier for South Australians to attend local commemorative events and offering free public transport to current and former servicemen and servicewomen.

“It’s important we recognise the service and sacrifice Australian Defence personnel and their families have made throughout our nation’s history.”

The State Government is also encouraging people to attend their local dawn services and community events, with public transport expected to play a key role in helping people get there safely and efficiently.

For those planning to travel, it’s recommended to check routes and timetables in advance via the Adelaide Metro website.

As the community comes together to honour the service and sacrifice of Australian Defence personnel and their families, the expanded transport options aim to make participation more accessible than ever.

Lest we forget.
