A fire broke out at Boston Medical Center in Brighton early Wednesday morning, prompting the transfer of about 25 patients from the hospital, including some in intensive care, officials said.
Firefighters responded around 1:30 a.m. to a blaze in an electrical room at the facility, the Boston Fire Department said in a post on X.
After extinguishing the flames, firefighters used multiple fans to clear heavy smoke from the building, venting it through a pressurized stairwell to a roof skylight, fire officials said in another X post.
Firefighters used baskets to carry patients down flights of stairs, the department said.
“A great coordinated response made the evacuation process go smoothly,” the department wrote.

All patients and staff were reported safe, a BMC spokesperson said. However, about 25 patients were transferred to other locations.
“While we have stable generator power, out of an abundance of caution, we are transferring some patients, including ICU patients, to other hospitals, including Boston Medical Center main campus, for continuity of care,” the spokesperson said.
Planned procedures and outpatient appointments scheduled for Wednesday were rescheduled, and the facility is not accepting ambulance patients, according to the spokesperson.
