As spring brings warm weather to New England, many locals are looking forward to spending time outdoors, and restaurants breaking out their outdoor dining tables to meet that desire. GBH’s Morning Edition host Mark Herz spoke with Marc Hurwitz, food writer and owner of the Boston Restaurant Talk Blog, for his suggestions on nearby spots that offer outdoor seating.
Restaurants in Massachusetts
Brewer’s Fork
7 Moulton St., Charlestown
Within walking distance of the Navy Yard, Brewer’s Fork is known for some of the best pizza in Boston and also one of the best beer lists in Boston. They have a beer garden to the side, which is nice and shaded. It’s a perfect place to go when you’re in Charlestown.
The Daily Catch
323 Hanover St., Boston
This classic North End spot now has a takeout window, so you can get seafood to go and then find a place to sit outside and enjoy clam chowder, lobster rolls, and more.
Floramos
492 Revere Beach Boulevard, Revere
This is a new location following Floramos’ famous Chelsea spot. Right across from beach, you can enjoy great views of the ocean while savoring their famous steak tips and ribs.
Harvard General Store
1 Still River Road, Harvard
Great for burgers, breakfast and pizza. It’s a country store that has a cafe inside it, which people don’t realize, but it’s beautiful place to go if you’re looking for a nice drive.
Hopothecary Ales Brewery and Kitchen
303 Main St., North Reading
This place feels like a restaurant that just so happens to make beer. Hopothecary has all kinds of food dishes and a nice patio in the back, away from busy Route 28.
La Tavernetta
45 Lewis St., Boston
La Tavernetta is a brand new Italian restaurant on Clippership Wharf with an ownership connection to MIDA. It has an outdoor dining area with spectacular views of Boston Harbor and the city skyline.
95 Eliot St., Milton
Steel & Rye is located in an old ambulance garage, complete with a large patio and outdoor space. It’s a great spot for seafood, steaks, chicken and pizza.
Volante Farms
292 Forest St., Needham
This is a farm store and a greenhouse. You can go and get produce and plants, then stop by the little deli inside. You can sit in the greenhouse and have a sandwich, a coffee, maybe some pastries — it’s just a really different kind of experience.
Restaurants outside Massachusetts
Papa Joe’s Humble Kitchen
237 South St., Milford, New Hampshire
Papa Joe’s is an old-school roadside snack spot that has award-winning burgers and traditional poutine. It also has a porch and a side patio, each of which has seating.
Stonecutters Pub
63 Union Square, Milford, New Hampshire
Right on the South Higgins River, you can sit outside of Stonecutters to watch the water and enjoy the breezes. It’s a great place to get pub food, comfort food, and just to hang out all day.
Stonewall Kitchen
2 Stonewall Lane, York, Maine
York is home to the headquarters of this well-known chain of specialty food and gift shops. It’s a sprawling place with two large rooms of food products and gifts, and they have a cafe where you can bring sandwiches, breakfast items, baked goods and pastries outside onto their patio.
