A medical camp and a free primary healthcare advisory centre were organised by the Maddilapalem zonal committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on the occasion of the 41st death anniversary of noted Communist leader Puchalapalli Sundarayya at Pithapuram Colony in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering at the Sitaram Yechury Bhavan here, CPI(M) district secretary M. Jaggunaidu called upon party workers and leaders to take up extensive service activities inspired by Sundarayya’s ideals and remain at the forefront of public movements concerning people’s issues.

Recalling Sundarayya’s contribution to the peasant struggle and land reforms, Mr. Jaggunaidu said despite being born into a landlord family, he dedicated his life to the welfare of the poor, middle classes, Dalits, minorities, women and tribal communities. He said: “Sundarayya championed the slogan ‘land to the tiller’ and worked for the redistribution of land to the landless.”

Mr. Jaggunaidu alleged that governments backed by “capitalist and communal forces” were burdening people and creating divisions in society, and said that the party continues to stand by the people in keeping with Sundarayya’s legacy.

Senior cardiologist Dr. G. Venkateswara Reddy inaugurated the primary healthcare centre. Doctors from various hospitals participated in the camp, where blood pressure, sugar, ECG and eye examinations were conducted. Organisers said around 120 residents of Ward 22 availed the medical services.
