Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday reviewed the progress of Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase I and Phase II projects, including key construction work, operational preparedness and plans for future expansion. During the review, he inspected train operating areas, major work sites and new corridors, and issued directions to officials.
He also looked at passenger facilities, including last-mile connectivity and feeder transport, and reviewed the readiness of a new corridor ahead of its expected opening. The inspection included a Metro journey, a visit to the Operations Control Centre, site visits to ongoing Phase II works and a trial run on an Unattended Train Operation driverless Metro train.
Accompanied by Finance, Planning and Development Minister N Marie Wilson, Alandur MLA M Harish, Maduravoyal MLA P Rhevanth Charan, Chief Secretary M Saikumar and senior Chennai Metro Rail Limited officials, Vijay began his inspection by travelling from Government Estate Metro Station to Nandanam Metro Station. He bought a ticket for the journey and interacted with commuters, taking selfies with them.
According to a press release, he later visited the Operations Control Centre at the Chennai Metro Rail Limited headquarters in Nandanam and reviewed with officials the monitoring and management of train operations. While reviewing Phase I and Phase II works, he discussed future Metro expansion plans and feasibility studies, and enquired about the last-mile connectivity and feeder transport arrangements for passengers travelling from stations to their final destinations.
Vijay then inspected the 101-foot-high Metro bridge at Kathipara under Corridor 5 of Phase II, which runs from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. He reviewed the construction of the “balanced cantilever” elevated bridge and asked about its construction methodology and progress. The press release said the work was being carried out without ground support pillars, through careful planning and strict safety measures, without disrupting Phase I Metro services or road traffic.
He then inspected the Porur Bypass Metro Station under Corridor 4 of Phase II and travelled on a trial run of the Unattended Train Operation driverless Metro train between Porur Bypass and Poonamallee Bypass Metro stations. The review covered current operations, expansion work and readiness for new services across the Chennai Metro network.
