Cape Verde’s impromptu Boston welcome: Cape Verde made waves in 2025 by becoming one of the smallest nations to qualify for a World Cup. And as the archipelagic country’s team travel for the upcoming tournament, it received a warm welcome in Boston during a flight layover.

Fans greeted the “Blue Sharks” on the tarmac, sharing their enthusiasm for a country that has never been on the World Cup stage.

The team is still traveling — it does not play any games in the Boston area — but will be in Hartford for a friendly against Bermuda on Saturday, June 6.

There will also be a Cape Verde send-off celebration at Pawtucket’s Centreville Bank Stadium on Sunday.

Cape Verde begins its World Cup journey on June 15 against Spain in Atlanta.

The Blue Sharks will have to navigate a difficult path, facing Uruguay in its second game (before a final group stage matchup against Saudi Arabia).
