Adelaide is heading into a lively run of spring weather, with today bringing the biggest hit of the week before a cooler, changeable stretch settles in across the city. Showers, possible severe thunderstorms and gusty winds are on the cards for Friday, then Adelaide swings between a brief warm-up and a cooler start to next week before calmer conditions return.
For Friday, Adelaide residents should be ready for a wet and unsettled day, with a very high chance of showers and a thunderstorm risk building through the afternoon and evening. The Bureau of Meteorology says storms could become severe, with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain that may lead to flash flooding. Northerly winds will strengthen through the middle of the day before a westerly change moves in by evening, and the city is heading for a top of 23 degrees. It’s the kind of day to keep an eye on the radar, especially for the trip home.
Saturday looks like the week’s breather. Adelaide is expected to see partly cloudy conditions with just a slight chance of a shower through the morning and afternoon. After Friday’s rougher weather, it should feel cooler and calmer, with a top of 21 degrees and lighter winds by evening.
Sunday brings another sharp shift. The morning is forecast to start sunny, but the warmer weather won’t last, with temperatures jumping to 29 degrees before showers move in later in the day. There’s also the chance of a thunderstorm in the evening as another system approaches. That makes Sunday a day of contrasts across Adelaide, from bright spring warmth to a more unsettled finish.
Monday cools off quickly again, with a top of just 18 degrees and a medium chance of showers, most likely in the morning. There’s also the chance of a thunderstorm early in the day before southwesterly winds freshen. Tuesday stays on the cool side, with a top of 16 degrees, partly cloudy skies and the chance of a morning shower. By Wednesday, conditions settle further with a cloudy top of 17 degrees and little rain expected, before Thursday brings a partly cloudy day and a slightly milder 19 degrees.
Across the wider state, South Australia is looking at a fairly active few days as troughs and cold fronts move through. Showers and thunderstorms are spreading across central and western districts today before reaching the east later on. Severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of the pastorals and central districts, with damaging wind gusts, large hail and a slight chance of heavy rainfall. Saturday brings a temporary easing, though southern agricultural areas could still see isolated light showers, while the far north and northeast may hang on to an early thunderstorm risk.
The heat returns on Sunday across parts of regional SA, with temperatures climbing above average before another round of showers and thunderstorms develops through the north and west, extending into central and eastern districts later in the day. Severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts are possible over parts of the west. By Monday, showers and storms become more widespread through central and eastern districts, with cooler air pushing in behind the change. Rainfall totals through to the end of Monday are expected to be highest across the southern agricultural areas, with isolated heavier falls possible over southern parts of the peninsulas, Kangaroo Island and the Mount Lofty Ranges.
Happy Friday!
