South Australians wanting to learn more about H5 bird flu and what they can do to protect local wildlife are being invited to a community information forum in Mitcham next week.

The free-to-attend public information session will take place on Monday, 12 October, from 6pm to 7.30pm at St Michael’s Anglican Church Hall, bringing together government representatives and health experts to discuss the latest bird flu response and preparedness measures across the state.

Minister for Climate, Environment and Water Emily Bourke will be joined by representatives from the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA), Department for Environment and Water and SA Health.

The session will cover animal, human and environmental health considerations, alongside public health advice and practical safety measures.

Importantly, attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions directly to an expert panel.

Acting Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Frances Walters said the forums were an opportunity for residents to understand how they could help protect local wildlife and other susceptible animals, including pets.

“These forums are a good opportunity for the community to find out more about H5 bird flu and what they can do to help protect birdlife and other susceptible animals, including pets.”

Authorities are continuing to encourage South Australians to remain vigilant and report wildlife that may be showing symptoms of the disease.

Warning signs in birds can include unusual behaviour, weakness, an inability to stand or fly, breathing difficulties, swelling or discolouration around the head, or multiple sick or dead birds in the same location.

Anyone who encounters sick or dead birds or other wildlife is advised not to touch them, but instead record their observations and contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

The Mitcham event forms part of a wider series of State Government community information sessions designed to keep residents informed as the situation develops.

Registration is essential. Residents can find further information and register at birdflu.sa.gov.au/community-forums.
