A Truck Driver’s Son Who Walked 6 KM to School Every Day Grew Up to Build Rockets

Some dreams seem impossible when viewed through the lens of circumstance.

After all, how does a boy from a small farming family, who walked nearly six kilometres to school every day and once dropped out of college, find his way into the world of rockets and space technology?

For Anand Megalingam, the answer lay in something more powerful than resources or privilege: the determination to keep moving forward, even when the path ahead seemed uncertain.

Today, Anand is the founder of Space Zone India, a startup working on reusable rocket technology. But long before he was building spacecraft, he was simply a young student trying to create opportunities where few existed.

Choosing persistence over setbacks

Growing up, Anand watched his father work hard to support the family by driving a tractor. Money was limited, and every step towards education required effort.

Like many young people navigating financial and personal challenges, Anand’s journey was not linear. At one stage, he dropped out of college, a setback that could easily have ended his aspirations.

Instead, it became a turning point.

Determined to continue learning, he shifted to Aeronautical Engineering and immersed himself in the subject he was passionate about. His hard work paid off, and he graduated as a Gold Medallist, proving that a difficult chapter does not have to define the rest of one’s story.

Reaching for the stars

The challenges did not stop there.

Along the way, Anand faced rejection, including a denied US visa application. But rather than viewing obstacles as roadblocks, he treated them as lessons.

Over the years, his dedication opened doors to international opportunities, including participation in NASA-linked aerospace programmes.

He later founded Space Zone India and became associated with pioneering projects such as the RHUMI-1 mission, contributing to India’s growing presence in the space technology sector.

For someone who once wondered how far his dreams could take him, the answer turned out to be much farther than he had imagined.

A story of possibility

What makes Anand’s journey remarkable is not only the success he has achieved but the resilience that carried him there.

His story reminds us that life’s detours do not have to become dead ends. Sometimes, the setbacks that seem most discouraging become the experiences that shape our future.

From walking kilometres to school in rural India to helping build technologies aimed at the skies above, his journey is proof that dreams are not defined by where we begin.

They are shaped by the courage to keep pursuing them.
