Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders QB battle gets update

The Cleveland Browns have one of the more interesting quarterback battles going on at training camp, as it’s not yet clear who will win the starting job between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. With training camp underway, head coach Todd Monken shared an update on how the competition is playing out early on.

Monken admitted there is no new information to share about Watson and Sanders, according to Zac Jackson of The Athletic. The quarterback order remains the same, and the longtime former offensive coordinator claimed that every quarterback on the roster will get some work. Watson and Sanders are getting the most playing time with the starting group.

“Monken: ‘Nothing has really changed’ with the QB order. Watson and Sanders will alternate with the 1s, but ‘all four will get meaningful reps.’ Said the Browns only need a starter by the opener,” Jackson reported.

Watson’s time in Cleveland has been lackluster, to say the least. Since joining the franchise in 2022, the 30-year-old quarterback has failed to play even eight games in each of the past three seasons. The 2025-26 campaign was arguably his worst, as he put up 1,148 passing yards and five touchdowns (career-low) through the air while completing 63.4% of his pass attempts. His veteran presence is likely why Monken is considering him for the starting job.

Sanders, on the other hand, has become a favorite amongst Browns fans. While his rookie year was nothing to gloat about, he at least flashed potential in his first eight career games (seven starts). The 24-year-old quarterback ended last season with 1,400 passing yards and seven touchdowns while owning a 56.5% completion percentage.

Todd Monken will likely utilize most of training camp and at least two preseason games to help him make his decision on who will start at quarterback. Whoever wins that job will lead the Browns in a Week 1 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road.
