Young man killed and woman fighting for life in separate Melbourne crashes

A young man is dead and a woman in her 20s is fighting for life after separate crashes on the outskirts of Melbourne.

The 22-year-old was killed in a head-on collision in the Dandenong Ranges, while the woman suffered critical injuries in a foggy crash that police say turned a family outing into a horror show.

On a scenic, windy road, the young man’s ute smashed head-on into a black SUV on an unassuming bend.

An off-duty nurse and paramedic tried to save him, but his injuries were too catastrophic.

A man and a woman inside the SUV were seriously injured and airlifted to hospital.

Ten hours prior, police were racing to another crash in Catani, southeast of Melbourne, that has devastated a family of four.

On a back country road before midnight, a local father in his 50s was driving the family Mercedes when police say he missed a stop sign, crossed a main road, then launched down an embankment.

“This is an example of why you’ve really got to drive to conditions,” Detective Seargeant Mark Amos of the Major Crash Investigation Unit said. “There is a family now that’s living a horror story.

“There were some fairly substantial fog patches around this area. It’s dark and you’ve just got to be careful.”

Both women were taken to the Alfred Hospital, while the father and his other daughter were taken to Frankston Hospital with minor injuries.

The mother in her 50s is in a serious but stable condition at the Alfred, however her daughter in her late 20s is still fighting for life in a critical condition.

Forensic crash investigators are now investigating and have spoken with the father who is in Frankston Hospital.

Locals have said the T-intersection where the Catani crash occurred is notoriously dangerous.
