The first time Rams tried to trade for Myles Garrett

The Los Angeles Rams put the entire NFL on notice on Monday. Los Angeles traded for superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett, sending Jared Verse and multiple draft picks to Cleveland. One Rams coach finally pulled off the deal that he has been dreaming about for years now.

This is not the first time that Rams head coach Sean McVay has attempted to trade for Garrett.

“The Rams have coveted Garrett for years. He’s one of McVay’s favorite players — ever,” The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue and Zac Jackson wrote on Tuesday. “The coach believes Garrett could eventually be regarded as the best outside pass rusher of all time.”

Garrett certainly looked like the GOAT in 2025. He broke the NFL’s single-season sack record with 23 sacks during the regular season. But McVay and the Rams had eyes on Garrett well before he broke that record.

In fact, the Rams initially reached out about Garrett just after winning Super Bowl 56.

“L.A. first called the Browns to inquire about Garrett’s availability in 2022 as the Rams attempted to repeat as Super Bowl champions, according to a league source,” Rodrigue and Jackson added. “That season was ultimately disastrous, due to the Rams’ injuries and McVay’s own burnout. Cleveland also was not open to trading Garrett at the time.”

Rodrigue and Jackson also noted that Rams leadership continued to discuss making a move for Garrett in the following offseason. Instead, they opted to rebuild their roster through the draft over the new two years.

But now the Rams are back in their “f*** them picks” mode after drafting QB Ty Simpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

It will be exciting to see how the addition of Garrett changes LA’s defense in 2026.
