5 Vogue-approved hacks to style your outfits with better proportion

Dressing up is rarely about matching pieces. More often than not, the reason an outfit works (or doesn’t) comes down to proportion. The relationship between the length, fit and shape of the pieces that make up a look is key to them working together. A blazer can look sharp or sloppy depending on where it ends. Wide-leg trousers can look elegant or overwhelming depending on the top. The right shoe determines if a midi skirt will feel chic or heavy. Proportion is what helps clothes look intentional on the body.

Good proportion is not about hiding the body or following old rules about what is ‘flattering’. Once you understand how length, fit and shape work together, styling becomes easier. And the same wardrobe suddenly gives you many more outfits.

Start with the longest line

Identifying the key piece is imperative to putting together a look. This is the item with the longest line—a pair of wide trousers, a maxi skirt, a long coat or an oversized shirt. Once you know where the weight sits, style the rest of the look around it.

If you are wearing full-length bottoms, avoid drowning the waist. A tucked shirt, cropped jacket or shorter knit will help balance the length. If you are wearing a long tunic or an oversized shirt, pair it with slim trousers, straight-leg denim pants or a sleek skirt. The idea is to find a focal point for the outfit.
