A worker was surgically removed from a conveyor belt in Westford on Friday.

Around 11:15 a.m., the Westford police and fire departments responded to an incident at 540 Groton Road, the fire department said in a press release.

A Newport Materials facility is located at the address the incident occurred, according to WCVB. The company makes construction materials like asphalt, according to its website.

First responders discovered the worker with an upper extremity trapped in a conveyor belt, the fire department said. The worker was 10 feet off the ground, WCVB reported.

The Essex County Technical Rescue Team, a surgical team, EMS, and Paramedics from Lowell General Hospital, and Boston MedFlight were all called in “due to the complex nature of the entrapment,” officials said.

The worker, whose name has not been released, was extricated from the conveyor belt at 1:30 p.m. and was then medflighted to a nearby trauma center, officials said.

“Our thoughts are with the worker, their family, and their coworkers this evening,” the fire department said. “We wish them the very best on their road to recovery.”
