Why Minnesota won’t hire new GM from 49ers, Browns

The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly casting a fairly wide net as they attempt to replace former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, whom they fired nearly three months ago. But the net isn’t wide enough, apparently, to include the Cleveland Browns or the San Francisco 49ers.

While CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones listed more than a dozen people who could interview for the vacant Vikings job, he noted that potential candidates from both the Browns and 49ers will likely be excluded from consideration.

“Some sources feel that since Adofo-Mensah came from the 49ers and Browns and did not work out, the Vikings are unlikely to pluck from those trees this time around,” Jones wrote.

Until being hired by the Vikings in 2022, Adofo-Mensah had spent his entire front-office career in San Francisco or Cleveland. He began with the 49ers in the football research and development department, rising to a director position, before leaving to become the Browns’ vice president of football operations in 2020. Less than a month after being fired, Adofo-Mensah rejoined the 49ers as a personnel executive.

Jones reported that Minnesota executive vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski, who took over after Adofo-Mensah’s firing, is a “strong candidate” to either land the Vikings GM job or earn himself a promotion to president. A GM would then likely be hired under him.

Also potentially in consideration, according to Jones, include Chad Alexander (Los Angeles Chargers), Chris Blanco (Houston Texans), Mike Bradway (Kansas City Chiefs), Trey Brown (Cincinnati Bengals), Ryan Cowden (New England Patriots), Ed Dodds (Indianapolis Colts), Terrance Gray (Buffalo Bills), James Liipfert (Texans), Rob McCartney (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), John McKay (Los Angeles Rams), Lacne Newmark (Washington Commanders), Nolan Teasley (Seattle Seahawks), Tim Terry (Chiefs) and Andy Weidl (Pittsburgh Steelers).
