What if a few hours of rain could turn an entire city into a flood zone?
Two hours of rain can flood Gurugram’s streets. But Oslo is tackling stormwater with a surprisingly simple idea, rain gardens.
In 2017, the city turned two streets into a flood-control experiment. Nine rain gardens can hold around 60 cubic metres of water, slowing runoff before it overwhelms drains. The bigger idea is simple: absorb smaller rains, store heavier rainfall and safely redirect extreme flows. Maybe flood resilience isn’t just about bigger drains, but smarter streets.
