Christopher Nolan’s appreciation for large-format cinema is well-documented. For years the director has encouraged moviegoers to seek out 70mm and IMAX screenings for his films including Dunkirk, Tenet and Oppenheimer. Now, ahead of the release of his next epic, The Odyssey, Nolan is making perhaps his strongest case yet for the format.
The upcoming adaptation is the first commercial feature to be shot entirely using IMAX film cameras, a technological feat that required the development of new cameras specifically for the production. As a result, Nolan has repeatedly positioned IMAX 70mm as the definitive way to experience the film. In a new interview shared to TikTok, the director delved into the very (very) detailed shoot process — and we have to say, it’s a pretty compelling reason to honour his wishes and get yourself to an IMAX cinema, quick-smart.
We’re not alone – the enthusiasm has been immediate. IMAX 70mm tickets went on sale months before the film’s release date, with screenings around the world selling out almost instantly as fans rushed to secure seats.
So if you’re reading this in Australia and wondering where you can experience the magic of The Odyssey as Nolan intended, we’ve got you covered. Here’s where you can watch it in IMAX around the country.
Victoria
For the ultimate The Odyssey experience, Melbourne is the place to be. IMAX Melbourne is currently the only Australian venue confirmed to screen the film in IMAX 70mm, the format Nolan used throughout production.
Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased here.
New South Wales
Sydney’s IMAX at Darling Harbour will screen The Odyssey in digital IMAX. While it isn’t the rare 70mm film presentation available in Melbourne, audiences will still benefit from the expanded aspect ratio, larger screen and immersive sound that Nolan designed the film around.
Tickets are on sale now, via Event Cinemas.
Queensland
Moviegoers in Queensland will need to get themselves to Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast in order to catch The Odyssey in IMAX.
Tickets are on sale now, via Event Cinemas.
Western Australia
There are currently two IMAX theatres available to Perth audiences.
