A family in Punjab’s Sangrur district suffered a double tragedy after burglars allegedly stole gold and cash worth several lakhs from their home while they were grieving the death of a close relative.
The incident took place in Lehal Kalan village under the Lehra subdivision, where thieves targeted the residence of village panchayat member and Aam Aadmi Party leader Pragat Singh. According to family members, the household was still mourning the death of Singh’s brother, who had passed away just two days earlier.
Police said the burglars allegedly took advantage of the situation and entered the house late at night by scaling a wall from the fields adjoining the property. The accused are believed to have cut through the iron grill of the main gate, opened the latch from inside and gained access to the house.
The thieves then reached a storeroom and ransacked an almirah, making away with around 22 tolas of gold jewellery and approximately Rs 1.5 lakh in cash. Remarkably, family members were asleep in rooms located on either side of the storeroom and remained unaware of the theft throughout the night.
The burglary came to light around 5 a.m. when family members woke up and discovered the missing valuables. Police were immediately informed, following which a forensic team and local officers reached the spot to begin an investigation.
Lehra DSP Palwinder Singh also visited the scene. Police said fingerprints have been collected and CCTV footage from nearby locations is being examined. Investigators expressed confidence that the accused would be identified and arrested soon.
The incident has sparked concern among residents of the area, with many shocked that criminals would target a family already coping with a recent bereavement.
