For another season, the Cleveland Browns have questions at the quarterback position, as they don’t know who will be the starter yet for Week 1. There is still plenty of time to figure it out, but it seems as if Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are in the lead for the spot.
For Watson, he didn’t have the chance to compete at all last season as he had to recover from an Achilles injury. This time around, he’s taking advantage of the opportunity, and there are some things he’s doing that may help his case for the starting nod, according to ESPN’S Daniel Oyefusi.
“Both Watson and Sanders had their moments during OTAs and minicamp. Watson looks healthy from not only his Achilles tear but a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery in November 2023. He appeared to be more willing to push the ball downfield than the last time he played competitive football,” Oyefusi wrote.
That’s big for Watson and is an important part of Todd Monken’s offense. Even though Watson showed he had the ability to push the ball down the field, Monken still needs some time to decide who will be the starter.
“It would feel different if I didn’t feel like their progression hadn’t gotten to this point where I think they both can start and play winning football,” Monken said. “I’m convinced of it. And I’d say it if I didn’t. I mean, I can’t decide now because I think both have earned the opportunity to continue to compete once we put the pads on.”
There will definitely be some clarity throughout training camp and when preseason arrives, but as of now, Monken probably can’t gain much from what he’s seeing.
It will be interesting to see who steps up next month and takes the starting nod.
