Naren Tummala, a Class XII student of Bloomingdale International School in Vijayawada, represented India at the Cambridge Centre for International Research Symposium held at King’s College, University of Cambridge, in U.K.,. He presented his research paper titled “Quantum Computing: Noise and Error-Correcting Codes” in the presence of 2017 Noble Laureate in Astro Physics Dr Barry C. Barish at the symposium.
As the only participant selected from India for the symposium, he presented his work on one of the key challenges in quantum computing, quantum noise, and explained how quantum error-correcting codes can improve the reliability and scalability of future quantum computers.
His research was supported by a quantum simulation project developed using IBM’s Qiskit platform, through which he created interactive simulations demonstrating the effects of quantum noise and the principles of quantum error correction. The project aims to make complex concepts in quantum computing more accessible to students and technology enthusiasts.
The international symposium brought together young students and researchers from across the globe, providing a platform to present innovative research and engage in discussions on emerging scientific and technological developments.
Speaking about the experience, Naren said that presenting his research at King’s College was a truly enriching experience. “The opportunity to interact with researchers from different countries has strengthened my interest in quantum computing and motivated me to continue pursuing scientific research,” he said.
Apart from his academic pursuits, Naren is actively involved in promoting digital literacy through community volunteer initiatives among the downtrodden in the society. He is also a World Book of Records holder for completing the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal as part of a three-generation family expedition with a mission to reduce global warming and save the Himalayas. For his achievement, Naren was awarded in UK Parliament in 2024, reflecting his commitment to perseverance, community service, and holistic development.
