Browns head coach Todd Monken placed some blame on how Cleveland handled the elements in a sloppy loss against the Jets on Sunday.
The Cleveland Browns had a rough showing in Week 5. Cleveland looked terrible against New York in an ugly 17-12 loss made even worse by heavy rain throughout the game. The Browns shocked their fans by how poorly they played in the elements against a beatable Jets team.
Browns head coach Todd Monken partially blamed the weather for his team’s terrible performance on Sunday.
“As an offense, we did not handle the elements very well. It was difficult on both teams. I’m sure there’s elements of their offense, the Jets, that they would look at and say they didn’t handle it very well. Whether it’s holding onto the ball or the penalties they had, it’s the same with us,” Monken said on Monday per Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot. “The team that handled it the best was going to give themselves an upper hand. And I just think collectively, Deshaun [Watson] being a part of that, I don’t think we handled the elements as well as we could have. … I’m sure Deshaun will say that he certainly can play better. And we can certainly play better around him.”
Monken was answering a question about how Watson looked after watching his game film. Watson never stood a chance with Cleveland allowing eight sacks against a ferocious New York defense. He finished 15-of-33 for 155 passing yards and a touchdown.
To be clear, Watson was not the only player on Cleveland’s offense who struggled on Sunday. Quinshon Judkins only managed 44 rushing yards on 14 attempts, showing the team’s rushing struggles. Judkins also went down with an injury along with KC Concepcion and Carson Schwesinger.
The Browns had a bad day of offense from top to bottom. Cleveland is 3-2 on the season and technically still alive in the AFC North division race. But the Browns will need to show some signs of life before fans will get too bought in on this season.
Next up for the Browns is a Week 6 matchup against the Ravens.
