Todd Monken was critical of the Browns’ quarterback protection after seeing Deshaun Watson get sacked eight times in their loss to the Jets.
Todd Monken made a declaration about the quarterback protection after the Cleveland Browns allowed Deshaun Watson to absorb eight sacks in their loss to the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon.
Going into the game, Cleveland had great momentum going its way. After losing the season opener, they won their last three games to have a solid 3-1 start to the campaign. They looked to extend the streak to four, but they took steps back by losing 17-12 to New York on the road.
One key aspect was Watson’s lack of protection. The Jets got to collect eight sacks, limiting Watson with the intense physicality and defensive stops. Monken reflected on the loss after the game, demanding better protection from the offense line with regard to Watson.
“Let’s just say this, eight sacks is a season-high. I hope like hell the rest of the time I’m here, we don’t have a game we have eight sacks,” Monken said, per reporter Camryn Justice.

How Deshaun Watson, Browns played against Jets
Deshaun Watson and the Browns will certainly have frustration towards the loss to the Jets. They missed a chance to have four straight wins and improve their place in the AFC standings.
It was a defensive game as Cleveland only trailed 7-6 at halftime. However, the offense’s woes on top of the sacks they conceded paved the way for New York to hold onto the win, leaving the Browns in disappointment.
Watson had a rough day throwing the ball. He completed 15 out of 33 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown while rushing six times for 40 yards.
Quinshon Judkins led the run game with 14 carries for 44 yards while catching three passes for six yards. Isaiah Bond led receivers with three catches for 74 yards, while Denzel Boston caught three passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.
The Browns will look to bounce back in their next matchup, being at home. They host the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6 as kickoff commences on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. ET.
