How a crazy final weekend sorted the Top Six

Having led the league table for the vast majority of the season Newcastle Jets sealed their first ever Premiership on the penultimate round of the campaign, and then followed up that success with a 4-0 thumping of rivals Central Coast Mariners in the F3 Derby.

Adelaide United sealed second spot on the ladder in the most dramatic fashion, with striker Luka Jovanovic scoring a 98th minute winner against Melbourne City at AAMI Park to see the Reds move from the Elimination Finals to the Semi-Finals in the blink of an eye.

INCREDIBLE DRAMA! Adelaide finish second after snatching last-gasp winner

That late Jovanovic goal subsequently saw Auckland FC go from having the week off to then having to host an Elimination Final, however their third placed finish ensured they’ll be at home at Go Media Stadium on Saturday.

Melbourne Victory finished the season in fourth place after a comprehensive 2-0 win over wooden spooners Western Sydney Wanderers helped them seal a home Elimination Final at AAMI Park.

Sydney FC looked as though they were on course to seal a second-placed finish on the final day of the regular season as they twice led Auckland FC at Allianz Stadium, only to concede a late goal which saw them drop down to fifth on the ladder.

Finally, reigning Champions Melbourne City were also vying to finish in the home Elimination Finals slots but Adelaide’s late, late show at AAMI Park ultimately saw them finish sixth on the ladder and, as such, booked them an Elimination Final date against Auckland FC.
